What should I do about our insect lore butterfly garden?

My caterpillars are on day 7 after recieving them in the mail. They are starting to hang around the top but they ate away a bunch of the paper that comes on their disc that they form into Chrysalises on. They haven't started yet so should I replace it with maybe a coffee filter or should I leave it be? I'm afraid that it will tare into pieces when I open it up?
