Can i get custody even though i owe 20k in child support?

i have not seen my son in almost 4 years. my ex gf's lawyers kept popping drug tests on me and the supervised visits were hell, so i left the scene. my ex gf is now in rehab, so i'm thinking i can get custody even though the cps placed my son with her parents who have been helping her raise him. what say you all?
