Getting muscle mass without weights..?

i was told, if you workout to failure, through all of the pain, what you are doing is taring the muscle cords, and as you recover, and the muscle recovers, new muscle cords grow over the old ones making the muscle bigger and stronger, if thats the case, why not push your limets with calisthenics each time, ripping and rebuilding?
